The news source stated that detoxing is based on the idea that the body may need help getting rid of contaminants that are the result of processed foods and toxins in the environment.
According to The Mayo Clinic, a detox or cleanse is typically a period of fasting followed by a strict diet that involves raw fruits and vegetables. Sometimes, it will also involve herbs, supplements or tinctures that work with the healthy foods to help remove toxins from the body.
Are detoxes safe?
WebMD warns that there are many unhealthy diet plans out there, so it's important for people to know what they are getting into and do their research before starting one. For example, detoxes that focus too much on fasting or drinking nothing but hot water and maple syrup may cause a person to lose weight rapidly only to put it back on when he or she returns to regular food. Furthermore, individuals may lose some muscle mass in the process.
Keeping this in mind, people should participate in a healthy, organic detox.
"Extremes like colonics, starvation, and prolonged juice cleanses are not recommended, but if you view detox diets as a way of clean eating, then it means eating natural, less-processed foods that are closer to the earth without artificial ingredients," said Christine Gerbstadt, M.D., quoted by the news source.
The expert made a list of some of the great detox foods.Topping it are lemons, green tea, sesame seeds and cabbage. Gerbstadt said that the best detox is a healthy diet that people can stick to on a long-term basis that involves many different of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean protein, beans, healthy fats and plenty of fluids.
