The Embarrassing Signs of Spring: When Histamine Affects Children’s Behavior

The Embarrassing Signs of Spring: When Histamine Affects Children’s Behavior

By Stephanie Ray, ND, Chinese Herbalist

Every spring I hear the same question from parents:

“My child suddenly seems like a different kid. Is something wrong?”

The mood swings. The anxiousness. The strange behaviors that appear out of nowhere.

And often—just as suddenly—they disappear when the season changes.

Spring brings an increase in pollen and environmental irritants. For some children, this creates a strong histamine response in the body. Histamine is a natural compound involved in immune function—but when levels rise too high, it can affect far more than sneezing or itchy eyes.

The body releases histamine as part of its protective immune response. It helps increase circulation, signals immune cells where they are needed, and helps the body respond to environmental irritations such as pollen, dust, or mold.

When histamine levels rise too high, however, it can begin affecting other systems in the body.

It can also influence mood, behavior, and nervous system function.

Signs Your Child May Be Reacting to High Histamine

When histamine levels rise, circulation and nerve signaling can change in ways that affect both the brain and body. Parents often report behaviors like:

  • Unprovoked anger or aggression

  • Sudden fears or anxiousness

  • Obsessive thoughts or repetitive behaviors

  • Constant physical discomfort or “adjusting” clothing

  • Hands frequently on private parts or unexplained genital stimulation

  • Difficulty recognizing the need to urinate

  • Sudden inappropriate language or vocal outbursts

Why Do Some Children Touch Their Private Parts More in the Spring?

One symptom parents sometimes notice—but rarely talk about—is increased genital touching or stimulation during certain seasons.

Histamine can increase circulation and nerve sensitivity, especially in areas with many nerve endings. During times when histamine levels are elevated, some children may experience unusual sensations that cause them to touch or adjust their private areas more frequently.

While this behavior can feel surprising or embarrassing for parents, it is often a temporary physical response to increased histamine and nervous system stimulation, not a behavioral issue.

While these behaviors can feel surprising—or even embarrassing for parents—they are actually very common nervous system responses to histamine and inflammation.

The Histamine–Behavior Connection

The relationship between biochemical imbalances and behavior was explored decades ago by Dr. Carl Pfeiffer (1908–1988), a physician and biochemist who studied how nutrient and neurotransmitter imbalances influence mental health.

Dr. Pfeiffer observed that elevated histamine levels could disrupt key neurotransmitters, including serotonin and dopamine—both essential for:

  • mood regulation

  • focus and attention

  • sleep patterns

  • emotional stability

More recent research continues to support this connection. Histamine acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain, influencing wakefulness, cognition, and emotional regulation.

Studies have shown that spring aggravations and elevated histamine may be associated with increased anxiousness, irritability, and behavioral changes in children.

Why Spring Makes Symptoms Worse

During the spring months, pollen counts rise dramatically as trees, grasses, and plants release pollen into the air for reproduction. For sensitive children, this increase in environmental exposure can trigger the immune system to release histamine.

When histamine levels stay elevated, the body may struggle to process and clear it efficiently.

Three systems are especially important in regulating histamine levels:

  • The liver – processes and clears histamine

  • The adrenal system – helps regulate inflammatory responses

  • The immune system – helps regulate seasonal irritations and aggravations, much of which is supported by immune activity in the digestive tract

When these systems are overwhelmed, histamine can accumulate and begin affecting the nervous system.

This is why parents often notice behavioral shifts that appear suddenly in the spring months.

Simple Ways to Support Histamine Balance

Parents often notice improvement when the body is supported during high-pollen seasons. A few simple steps can make a meaningful difference:

• Increase hydration to help the body process and eliminate histamine. A simple guideline is for children and teens to drink about half their body weight in ounces of water each day (for example, a 60-pound child would aim for about 30 ounces daily).

• Support healthy liver detoxification by including seasonal foods that naturally nourish the liver. Spring vegetables like artichokes and asparagus are especially supportive—they encourage healthy bile flow and help the liver process environmental irritants. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is the season of the Liver, when children’s bodies are naturally primed to clear stagnation and support detoxification.

• Limit high-histamine foods during flare-ups. These are foods that either contain higher levels of histamine or stimulate the body to release more histamine. Common examples include aged cheeses, fermented foods (like sauerkraut or kombucha), processed or cured meats, smoked or canned fish, vinegar-based foods, tomatoes, chocolate, and some citrus fruits.

• Support the nervous system and emotional balance. When histamine levels rise, the nervous system can become overstimulated. I share a simple nature-based practice that many families find helpful in this article:

Natural Solutions for Children’s Health and Histamine Management

BIORAY Kids formulas are designed to support the body’s natural detoxification systems while helping children respond more calmly to environmental stressors.

Several formulas can be especially supportive during seasons when histamine levels rise.

NDF Calm®
Supports healthy liver function and helps the body process excess histamine while supporting a calm nervous system.

NDF Focus®
Supports detoxification and helps remove environmental toxins that can make the body more susceptible to histamine responses while supporting focus and clarity.

NDF Tummy®
Provides important gut-immune support, which plays a key role in how children respond to environmental irritations. The formula contains an 11-strain probiotic lysate blend, meaning the probiotic cells have been gently broken down to release their cytoplasm—the part that holds the most beneficial compounds.

This approach helps support the body by:

  • Boosting gastrointestinal immune response (IgA)*

  • Supporting GI lining integrity and resilience (IgM)*

The Good News for Parents

One of the most reassuring things parents learn is this:

These behaviors are not permanent personality traits.

They are often temporary physiological responses to environmental stressors—especially during seasons with high pollen and environmental exposure.

Many parents naturally ask, “How long will this last?”

For many children, these symptoms improve as pollen levels decrease or when the body is supported in clearing excess histamine.

When the body is supported and histamine levels normalize, children typically return to the calm, balanced version of themselves that parents know so well.

And parents can feel good knowing their child’s body is simply responding—and finding its way back to balance.
