#4: Removing Unwanted Organisms

45 Day Total Body Detox 2024

By Stephanie Ray, ND, BCN

Heavy metals, high stress, poor diet, and inadequate chewing all contribute to increasing acidity within the body. This acidity makes us a very good host for unwanted organisms. An unwanted organism is one that lives in or on an organism of another species (the host), and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense. As we are removing heavy metals during the 45-Day Total Body Detox, this is an optimal time to also address these other unwelcome imbalances, such as unwanted organisms.

How do you know if you have unwanted organisms?

Well, if you have dined at a restaurant in the last twelve months, have pets, ever skipped washing your hands or if you crave sweets or carbohydrates, the answer is most likely “yes.” In our clinical experience over a 4 year period of stool testing every patient for unwanted organisms, 99.9% had between one and five different kinds of unwanted organisms.

Signs of Unwanted Organisms

  • Craving carbs and sugar
  • Unexplained anger
  • Not feeling like one’s self
  • Grinding teeth
  • Itchy bottom
  • Restless sleep
  • Hard or soft stools

Unwanted organisms steal vital nutrients from the body, skew emotions and mental function, damage tissues and organs, and increase our need to detoxify. They turn our bodies into the perfect environment for health issues to develop.

Unwanted Organisms and Digestion

The relationship between unwanted organisms and digestion is intimate and tangled. Poor digestion can open the doors for organisms to flourish, while a perfectly healthy digestive tract can be derailed by the introduction of one of these organisms.

When a person experiences sluggish bowels or does not evacuate completely when having a bowel movement, the body does not get to eliminate waste products as intended. This stagnant matter turns the intestines into a playground for unwanted organisms as they see it as a great source of sustenance. In addition, the body now has to share the food consumed with these unwanted guests. When there is less protein, carbohydrates, fats, and nutrients for the body, it can lead to cravings, specifically for carbs and sugar. It can be a vicious cycle and one that is difficult to interrupt.

Unwanted organisms are a natural part of life. We get them from pets, organic produce, and from kids playing in dirt. Most often they are passed from one individual to another through the hands of someone who prepares our food. The eggs of these organisms get stuck under fingernails and around the cuticle bed. If one is not washing hands properly, (see Bioray’s suggestions for proper handwashing below), we are generally redistributing them among ourselves. These were recognized as a potential health issue even back in ancient Egypt. By observing and following the suggestions here, you have a greater opportunity for keeping them away. Besides the health benefits, your family will be happier for it as well :).

Clinical Tip: How to Wash Hands the Right Way

  1. Wet hands with clean, running water and apply soap.
  2. Rub hands together, lather them well. Be sure to include the backs of hands and between fingers.
  3. With one hand, take the index finger and go around each cuticle and under each nail bed of the opposite hand. This is crucial, as we see eggs from unwanted organisms left under nail beds and around cuticles with the "simplified" handwashing which is common for most people.
  4. Continue rubbing hands for at least 20 seconds. You can tell kids to hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end, twice.
  5. Rinse hands well under running water.
  6. Dry hands using a clean towel or air dry them. If you are in a public bathroom, use a drying towel to grip the door handle. Dispose neatly in closest trash bin.

Foods that support the removal of unwanted organisms:

  • Garlic
  • Sauerkraut
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Lime
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Foods that are alkalizing and warming
